Richard R. ‘Pooch’ Reed

LEWISTOWN - Richard R. "Pooch" Reed, 84, of Lewistown died at 4:40 a.m. Sept. 12, 2012, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born on Feb. 23, 1928, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Irvin C. and Helen R. (Wagner) Reed.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. (Ritter) Reed and his sister, June Cooper.

He is survived by: children, Denise Davis, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Gary Adair and wife, Mary, of Glen Burnie, Md., and Patricia Sweitzer and husband, Code, of Lewistown; five grandchildren, James Rex Naylor Jr. and wife, Rachelle, and Andrea Parker, both of Lewistown, James Matthew Hafer and wife, Joy, of Summerville S.C., Helen Adair, of Glen Burnie, and John Adair III and wife, Hazel, of Towson, Md.; six great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Tracey Hallman and husband, Steve, of Marble Falls, Texas.

Richard served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1953 attaining the rank of staff sergeant, and later, served as a recruiter.

He was a school teacher at vo-tech for more than 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Richard was a member of the American Legion, VFW, BPOE 663 (former Exalted Ruler), Marine Corps Association and Marine Corps League.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes Inc., Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., with the Rev. Randy Traxler officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment with VFW Post 7011 honors will take place in Lind Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SPCA, 2451 General Potter Highway, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
