Stroup-Alexander VFW Post 5935 Adjutant Ronald Carson salutes after placing a torn and tattered United States flag into the fire during the flag retirement ceremony held Thursday at the post in Belleville. Standing to the right of Carson is Post Manager John Kennedy. Incinerating a flag is the proper way to retire it when it is no longer suitable for display. The flag retirement ceremony was sponsored by the Stroup-Alexander VFW Post 5935 and Boy Scout Troop 6, Burnham. The retired flags will be interred at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Belleville.
