Florence Virginia Burdge

MIFFLINTOWN - Florence Virginia Burdge, 93, of the Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown, died at 11:42 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Brookline.

Born March 25, 1919, in Lack Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Harry D. and Bertha V. (Short) Jones. On February 4, 1939, she married Ralph Franklin Burdge Sr., with whom she spent nearly 52 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 19, 1990.

Surviving are: three granddaughters, Susan Foster, of State College, Stacey Bell and Angela Carol Bashore, of Mifflin; one brother, Samuel Short Jones, of Elm Croft of Reedsville; and she leaves behind four great grandchildren, Matthew Foster, Elizabeth Foster, Bradley Lipka, and Zach Bell.

Four sisters, Mary Kay Brumbaugh, May Varner, Ruth Varner, Esther Morrison and one brother, Wilmer Jones, preceded her in death.

Florence was the valedictorian of the Fanette Township High School Class of 1936, and a member of the former Methodist Church in Waterloo. She attended the Central PA Business College and took courses from the University of Nebraska and held a Civil Service appointment in Harrisburg from 1937-1941. After marrying, she was a substitute school teacher in Lack and Tuscarora townships for a number of years.

Mrs. Burdge enjoyed music, having played the piano at several local churches, and giving music lessons. She also wrote poetry and maintained a large garden where she kept beautiful flowers; however, her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family who will miss her dearly.

A graveside service will be private at the Book Cemetery, Shade Valley, with Pastor Judy Rowles officiating.

There will be no viewing, however, family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon, on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
