LEWISTOWN - A Lewistown man has been arrested, accused of assaulting a female with a hammer early Sunday morning, Lewistown Police Department reports.
Police said Michael Bickel, 27, of Lewistown, has been arrested and charged after responding to a residence on the 600 block of West Fourth Street at 2:25 a.m., after an unknown male placed a 911 call stating that there was an injured female there.
Police said they found the 31-year-old woman alone in the home with severe head and facial injuries. She was transported to Lewistown Hospital by Fame EMS and then flown via helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, according to the report.
The report states investigating officers determined the woman was hit with a hammer, which was recovered at the scene, and concluded Bickel had been the assailant. Bickel had a relationship with the victim and they had lived together but it was unclear what the current status of the relationship was, police said.
After conducting interviews and executing a search warrant, police learned that Bickel was hiding in the woods near Lewistown and Granville. According to the report, Bickel was taken into custody around 7 a.m. Sunday by Granville Township and Lewistown police departments and was charged with attempted homicide, attempted voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault. He is being held in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility pending further court action.
The report states the victim is in stable but critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center. Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown also assisted in the investigation.
