PORT ROYAL -Jim Reagan's beard has been growing for 37 years, but it's never been as long as it is now. And his moustache has grown to the point that he's learning to twist it into the old-fashioned handlebar style.
Reagan is getting ready for the Beard and Period Dress Contest that will be a part of the Port Royal Borough 200th anniversary celebration Sept. 28 to 30.
It's only natural that Reagan has embraced the historic event in his hometown. He's just following in the footsteps of his father, Bernie Reagan, who was the general chairman of the borough's sesquicentennial celebration in 1962.

Jim Reagan has ceased trimming his beard and moustache in preparation for the Port Royal Bicentennial Beard and Period Dress Contest in September.
While Reagan and the other men of the town grow their beards for the contest, and other residents conjure up old-time outfits to dress up for the event, the bicentennial committee members continue to make plans, organize schedules and sell memorabilia at the special shop on Milford Street.
The newest addition to the store is a tan and blue stoneware commemorative crock that features the event's logo and dates. The limited-edition crocks are available at the shop, which is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The crocks sell for $35.
Flags for decorating, baskets, sweatshirts, license plates and numerous other souvenirs are also available at the store, as are registration forms for the Beard and Period Dress Contest, the House Decoration Contest and the Perrysville to Port Royal - A 200 Year Journey Parade.
Area churches, granges, organizations and fire companies have been invited to participate in the parade, scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 (rain date is Sept. 30). Individuals and organizations that did not receive letters with invitations are also welcome to participate. Pick up a registration form at the store, or call Molly Kinney at 527-4152 or Connie Fenner at 527-4075.
The committee is also asking anyone with items to display at a bicentennial museum in the Floral Hall at the Port Royal Fairgrounds from Sept. 28 to 30 to contact Carlen McClure at 527-9910, or Mim Anstine at 527-4911.
Brochures listing the schedule of bicentennial events are expected to be placed in Port Royal area businesses within days.
In addition, volunteers are needed to help with specific jobs such as setting up and tearing down chairs and equipment, and preparing the stage for various events; working at the welcome center; helping with parade registration and formation, and more. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact any committee member.
