BELLEVILLE - Big Valley challenged State College American late in the game, but didn't have enough to overcome what started as a nine-run deficit, falling 12-10 in the first round of the District 5 South 9-10 Little League baseball tournament Friday.
State College had an 11-2 lead in the fifth when the locals put up seven runs, all scored with two outs, keyed by a bases-clearing triple by Wyatt Garver, the biggest hit of the game for Big Valley.
Also for Big Valley, Ethan Eichhorn and Kaden Milliron had doubles. Colby Bodtorf went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Milliron and Marshall Maidens each drove in runs, along with the three RBIs from Garver's triple.
Big Valley drops to the consolation bracket, where it gets a bye for Sunday's second round. The team will travel Tuesday to play an opponent to be determined by Sunday's games.
Mifflin County 13,
Marion Walker 5
LEWISTOWN - After surendering the first run, Mifflin County's 9-10 team went on a rampage, scoring 11 runs across two innings for a 13-5 win.
The locals had 13 hits in the game, which advances them to the second round in the championship bracket.
They will host either State College or Penns Valley Sunday in a second-round game.
Centre County League
Mifflin County Stars 8, Howard 5
MILROY - Howard took an early four-run lead while Mifflin County floundered, but the Stars pulled it together and finished with an 8-5 upset in their Centre County League game Friday.
Errors - and a mental mistake not scored as an error - not to mention a two-run homer - aided the visitors in the top of the first.
But before the game ended, Casey Zimmerman homered for the Stars, Cameron Rhoads added a double and those two, along with Nic Beamenderfer and Isaac Strohecker all had two hits apiece for an 8-5 upset win.
"It sort of looked a little dismal from the start but we kept working and put it together in the end," Mifflin County manager Danny Knepp said.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mifflin County took the lead when Colton Spade singled with two outs, then pinch runner Tim Beck scored on a Zimmerman single. Beamenderfer, on third at that point, scored when Zimmerman drew a throw stealing second. He also stole third, then got the final run on that steal when Howard made a throwing error.
The Stars (4-8) travel to Spring Mills Sunday.
Legion baseball
West Snyder 9, Line Mountain 3
BEAVER SPRINGS - Shane Connahan hit a two-run triple and Ryan Combs plated Connahan with a single to break open a tie game in the fifth, and an inning later West Snyder scored five runs on the way to a 9-3 win in Susquehanna Valley American Legion League action Friday.
In the sixth, a two-run single by Colton Snook and a two-run triple by Eli Stem aided the Snyder County team. Colton Keister picked up the win on the hill.Connahan also had a triple and three RBIs. Combs drove in two runs. Zach Mast was 2-for-2.
West Snyder travels to Berwick Wednesday.
