Jerald Raymond Goss

HARRISBURG - Jerald Raymond Goss, 86, of Harrisburg, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012.

He was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Vira, a son of the late John D. and Cora Mae (Spigelmyer) Goss. His wife, Anna Louise (Fultz) Goss, survives.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Cheryl Ann (Goss) Reckner, of Appleby Road, Harrisburg, and Cindy Lou (Goss) Koch, of Mountain Road, Dauphin; three granddaughters; two grandsons; and three great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by: a daughter, Carol Diane (Goss) Nagle, on June 18, 1991; two sisters, Bertha Kathrine (Goss) Stuck Edkin and Ella Mae (Goss) Harshbarger; and a brother, Merl J. Goss, of Harrisburg.
Mr. Goss was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the 66th Infantry Division, the 42nd Rainbow Division and the Army of Occupation in Germany. He joined the Regular Army on Nov. 12, 1945, and served for two years in Schuarzach, Austria, and the balance of his time in Stuttgart, Germany, in the 346th combat engineers battalion as a heavy truck driver. He received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star for service in the European African Middle-eastern campaign.
He is listed on the Millennium Honor Roll of the National World War II Memorial, in Washington, D.C.
Upon returning home on March 17, 1947, he worked for Hertzler and Zook, in Belleville, and then American Viscose Corp., in Lewistown. After the family moved to Harrisburg, he worked for John Stapf Co., as a cement mixer driver. He became the foreman of the iron shop for 20 years, fabricating structural steel and ornamental iron railings. Then he was employed by the State Department of Buildings and Grounds as a machinist, retiring after 10 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 272, in Linglestown, and the National Rifle Association for many years.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Bohn Funeral Home, 55 N. Main St., Reedsville, with the Rev. John Overman officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Leukemia Society of America.
