Plea issued to school leaders for S.T.E.A.M.

May 17, 2012
Lewistown Sentinel

To the editor:

Enough is enough, leaders of our community's public schools. I am hearing that your latest targeted audience of deep budget cuts might just be our youngest, most creative students.

If you slash and eliminate elementary art and music, you guarantee that our children will never succeed in science, technology, Engineering and math.

"S.T.E.M." is necessary for our young people to succeed in a 21st century work world, but the fact remains that a letter is missing. "A" as in "arts" must be included for our kids to have a chance at success.

More than any time in our nation's history, creative problem solvers are in demand to meet the challenging, ever changing, global, work environment. Growing thinkers need to nurture all areas of the mind to become healthy, expressive, adult visionaries.

Please do the right thing, turn S.T.E.M. into S.T.E.A.M. and allow our youngsters to build a better tomorrow.
