Ruth N. Varner

MIFFLINTOWN - Ruth N. Varner, 90, of Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown, and formerly of Shade Valley, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Brookline.

Born on June 21, 1921, in Lack Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Harry D. and Bertha V. (Short) Jones. On Nov. 3, 1941, she married her husband, Martin A. Varner, with whom she spent nearly 61 years of marriage, until he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2002.

Surviving are: two sons, Martin S. Varner and his wife, Barbara, of Blairs Mills, and George T. Varner and his wife, Kay, of Mifflintown; a brother, Samuel Jones, of Elm Croft of Reedsville; a sister, Florence Burdge, of Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown; and she leaves behind three grandchildren and five great-granddaughters.

One daughter, Olive Mae Varner, and three sisters, Mary Varner, Mary Kay Brumbaugh and Esther Morrison, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Varner was a 1939 graduate of Fannett Township High School and a homemaker for her married life. She was a former and very active member of the Rock Assembly of God Church, and currently was attending the New Beginning Community Church, Spruce Hill.

Ruth enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden and her flowers. She will long be remembered for her gift of baking; however, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the New Beginning Community Church, Spruce Hill with her nephew, the Rev. Robert Varner, officiating. Interment will follow in the Book Cemetery, Richvale.

Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.

For those who desire, memorial contributions in Mrs. Varner's memory may be made to the New Beginning Community Church, 20343 Rte 75 S, Port Royal, PA 17082.
