MOUNT UNION - Fred H. Fortney, 78, of 12581 Aughwich Mills Road, Mount Union, died at 3:30 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2012, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born May 21, 1933, in Wayne Township, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Franklin J. and Kathryn (Hill) Fortney.
Fred was preceded in death by his former wife, Shirley Ulsh. He is survived by his companion, Linda (Wagner) Fortney.

Brown and husband, Kevin, of Three Springs; stepchildren, Kathy Inch and husband, Dave, of Shirleysburg, Milford Fortney, of Germany Valley, Donald Fortney and wife, Pam, of Mount Union, and Harry Fortney, of Robertsdale; grandchildren, Travis Fortney, April Henderson, Trina Nieles, Andrea Bickert, Michael Wagner, Beth Wagner, Becky Linton, and Corrie Mellott; siblings, Clarence Fortney and wife, Betty, of Huntingdon, Nellie Seilhamer, of Shirleysburg, Linda Cohenour and husband, Gerald, of Three Springs, and Judy Zeigler and husband, Donald, of Meadow Gap; seven stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry J. Fortney, and a sister, Carolyn Lane.
Fred served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War, on the USS Missouri. He was a union painter from 1956 to 1966, and then worked at NAPA Auto Parts from 1966 to 1972. After that, he worked construction from 1972 to 1975 and retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglas after 10 years of service.
Fred attended Singers Gap United Methodist Church. He was a member of Newton Wayne Sportsmans Club and VFW Post #5754, Mount Union.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and making turkey calls, and was well-known for his homemade peanut butter fudge.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Pastors Julie Piper and Clarence Fortney officiating. Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 7, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Haven Rest Memorial Park, in Shirleysburg.
