LEWISTOWN - The Mifflin County District Attorney's Office has used some drug task force forfeiture monies to purchase four ballistic shields for local law enforcement.

District Attorney Dave Molek and Assistant District Attorney Mark Remy presented the Mifflin County Regional Police Department, Lewistown Police Department, Granville Township Police Department and the Mifflin County Sheriff's Department each with Baker Ballistics Patrol Bat shields.

Cpl. Marty Bubb with Granville Township Police Department demonstrates the new Bat Shield purchased for the department by the district attorney’s office.

These shields are portable and designed to be carried in a vehicle for immediate availability to the officers. They weigh just 13 pounds, are made of Kevlar and come in a seat pack which is belted into the passenger side of the patrol car.

The shields help provide some degree of protection to police officers and deputy sheriffs in potentially dangerous situations.

Chief William Herkert of the Lewistown Police Department said, "we are very happy to receive the shield to improve our officers' safety in the field."

Mifflin County Regional Police Department Chief Scott Mauery felt the shield is a "huge enhancement to both officers' and public safety."

Sheriff Chris Shade expressed his appreciation and "will utilize the shield hand-in-hand with his office's training and security measures."

Molek said this is an example of how the Mifflin County Drug Task Force's seizures and forfeitures benefit our Mifflin County community.

"Law enforcement needs all available tools to help keep our people safe," Molek said. All four departments expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the equipment.
