Farmers won’t be helped by subsidies

January 7, 2012
Lewistown Sentinel

For generations, tens of billions of U.S. taxpayers' dollars have been shoveled away through various agriculture subsidy programs. Many of them reward big agri-businesses, not small family farms.

Farm subsidies are one of the biggest outrages in the federal budget. Now, farm state members of Congress want a new package of subsidies, to guard farmers against crop losses not covered by other insurance.

Even the American Farm Bureau Federation thinks it's a bad idea. It will encourage farmers to take risks they otherwise would avoid, the AMBF points out.

Congress should waste no time in plowing the idea under.
