McVEYTOWN - An early morning fire near McVeytown nearly destroyed an old two-story stone home on West Furnace Road.

McVeytown Fire Chief Ryan Wilson said he thinks the home is a total loss.

The first call for the fire at 416 W. Furnace Road came over the air at 5:40 a.m. Shortly thereafter the first firemen on the scene were met with an intensely-hot fire, Wilson said.

"The first guys on the scene took a pretty good beating," he added.

Wilson said nobody was injured, however two dogs died in the fire and there were still two dogs and a cat unaccounted for.

"As far as I know there was only one person in the house ... he will be staying with family,"Wilson said.

By 9 a.m. the fire appeared to be out and firemen could be seen tossing burnt debris from a second story window.

Wilson said the cause of the fire was unknown and a fire investigator has been called in to conduct an investigation.

Wilson said he was thankful for all the fire companies that assisted at the scene and those that were placed on transfer assignments because of the fire.

Those responding to the scene were, McVeytown, Junction, West Granville, Granville, Newton Wayne, Mount Union, Burnham, Belleville, Highland Park, Reedsville, Mill Creek, Beale Township, Thompsontown, East Derry and Allensville fire companies as well as Mifflintown Hose Co. Also responding to the scene were Medic 29, Fame EMS, McVeytown EMS and Big Valley EMS.
