NEWPORT - East Juniata's golf team will rely on depth throughout the 2011 season. The Tigers made that official on Thursday as they dominated the competition in the first match of the 2011 season at the Newport American Legion Country Club.
Led by Christian Searer's match-low 80, the Tigers posted five scores in the 80s and one in the 90s in claiming the victory. East Juniata fired a combined four-player score of 330. Newport followed with a 364 and Millersburg shot a 387.
"That's all the coach can ask for," East Juniata coach Mike Zendt said. "We have pretty good depth and it showed today in this match. I certainly can't complain."
Searer was followed by Jeremy Pannebaker (81), Colton Fogleman (84) and Garrett Leister (85). Pannebaker placed second overall and Fogleman was tied for third.
"Christian played very well," Zendt said. "There were places he could have done better, but overall he was pleased with the way he played.
"We have those five guys and our sixth man isn't that far away from helping us," Zendt said. "Anytime you got five or six guys in the 80s it gives you a real good shot to win a golf match."
East Juniata will get back to the links on Tuesday at the American Legion County Club in Mount Union.
