Ballot to be crowded for May primary

LEWISTOWN - School board politics looks to be the focal point in this year's primary election cycle with nine people in Mifflin County running for five open spots and eight candidates running for seven spots in Juniata County.

Three incumbent school board members in Mifflin County - Beth Reifsnyder, John Traxler and Kirk Rager - have chosen not to run for re-election according to an unofficial list released by the voter registration and elections office.

The nine cross-filed candidates running are as follows: Ruth D. Armstrong, Janel Harrop, Beth Laughlin, David W. Molek, Neil Russler, Mary Lou M. Sigler, Kent A. Smith, Annemarie Swineford and Thomas White Jr.

According to an unofficial list released by Juniata County, incumbent school members Elaine Van Horn, Mark Wagner and Angela Burdge are not seeking re-election.

According to the unofficial release, of the eight candidates running for Juniata County School Board, seven have cross-filed: Gary Zeiders, Glenda Ehrenzeller Leister, Ray D. Page, Melvin E. Brubaker Jr., Daniel I. Clark, Christine D. Shadel and John G. Noss. Danny R. Snyder has filed to run only as a Democrat.

In the Mount Union Area School District, two cross-filed candidates have filed petitions to run for school board, Dolly M. Ranck and Rexall H. Secrest.

Of the three incumbent Mifflin County Commissioners, only Bob Reck has chosen not to run. Both Mark Sunderland and Otis Riden are running as Republicans, in addition to three other candidates running as Republicans, Monte Kemmler, James R. Fosselman and Dave Runk, according to the unofficial list. In addition, two Democratic candidates are running as well - Kevin P. Kodish and R. Dennis Noble.

In Juniata County, Commissioner Dale Shelley has chosen not to run again but Commissioner Jeffrey Zimmerman, a Republican, and Commissioner Teresa L. O'Neal, a Democrat, are both running, according to the release.

Also running for commissioner on the Republican ticket are Gary Tweedle, Mark F. Wagner, Robert N. Reynolds and Timothy L. Foltz.

On the Democratic side, O'Neal will be joined by two other Democrats running: Steven L. Zeiders and Mark Partner.

Juniata County District Attorney Cory Snook is running unopposed as the Republican candidate and no Democratic candidate filed petitions, according to the unofficial release. Mifflin County District Attorney Stephen S. Snook is in the same boat, running unopposed on the Republican ticket in the primary with no Democratic candidates filed.

Other county positions on the ballot in Mifflin County include two county auditor positions where Helen E. Kirk and James W. North Jr., are running as Republicans and Cynthia G. Knorr is running as a Democrat.

Longtime incumbent Mifflin County Coroner Daniel P. Lynch will face off against D. Scott Swanger on the Republican ticket. No Democratic candidate filed petitions for county coroner.

Republican Mifflin County Prothonotary candidate Tammy Stuck is running unopposed in the primary and no Democratic candidate filed petitions.

Magisterial District Judge Jack Miller has cross-filed for the primary and is running unopposed. Miller's district encompasses Juniata Terrace Borough, Kistler Borough, Lewistown Borough Wards 1 to 5, McVeytown Borough, Newton Hamilton Borough, Bratton Township, Granville Township, Oliver Township and Wayne Township.

In Juniata County, incumbent Republican Coroner Lee E. Snyder is running unopposed and no Democratic candidate has filed petitions.

Incumbent Republican Prothonotary candidate Lori A. Ferry is running unopposed in her party and no Democratic candidate has filed petitions.

Two Republican candidates filed petitions for Juniata County auditor - Nancy H. Phelan and Miriam Anstine. Three Democratic candidates have also filed petitions, R. Edward Rozell, Laura A. Cunningham and David S. Stetler.

Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline Leister is running for re-election unopposed as a cross-filed candidate. Leister's district encompasses Beale, Lack, Milford, Spruce Hill, Turbett, Tuscarora and Walker townships, as well as Mifflin Borough and Port Royal Borough.
