MIFFLINTOWN - Bonnie Wheat, 88, of Mifflintown, went home to be with her Lord and savior at 10:13 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.

Born on March 10, 1921, in Hopkins County, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Valentine and Minnie Selina (Tabor) Wheat. Her husband, Dewey D. Wheat, Sr., preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1974.

Surviving are her children: Rev. D. D. "Buddy" Wheat, Jr. (Colonel, U.S. Army, Retired) and his wife Gayle (Miller) Wheat, of Mifflintown, Joe Don Wheat, of Wagoner, Okla., one brother, David Wheat, of Mabank, Texas, one sister, Della Lone, Sulfur Springs, Texas. She leaves behind three grandchildren, Jason S. Thomas and his wife Sharon, Justin S. Fortner, Jeffrey S. Fortner, all of Pampa, Texas and five great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were four brothers, Jefferson Wheat, Asberry Wheat, Alvin Wheat, John Wheat and three sisters, Velma Pippin, Rose Wenglasz, and Emily Wheat, in infancy.

She was a 1939 graduate of Miller Grove High School, Miller Grove, Texas.

Mrs. Wheat was a member of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia, and a former member of the Miller Grove United Methodist Church, Miller Grove, Texas. She also held memberships to Order of the Eastern Star, Pampa Chapter No. 65, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and the VFW Post 1657 Pampa Post Ladies Auxiliary, all of Pampa, Texas.

During WW II, Mrs. Wheat served her country in the capacity of a quality control inspector of five-inch Naval gun ammunition at the Red River Arsenal Plant, Red River, Texas. Later, she, along with her late husband, owned and operated Wheat's Jewelry Store, Pampa, Texas, after which she had worked at various grocery stores in the Pampa area.

Bonnie enjoyed cut work embroidery, watching Fox TV News, and doing word find puzzles. Since moving to Mifflintown, she found that scenic Pennsylvania gave her great joy, especially the local sights of Juniata County and Gettysburg. Most of all, Bonnie loved people, no matter where she met them.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, from the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia with the Rev. Jon A. Black officiating. Following services in Pampa, Texas, interment will be in the Memory Gardens, Pampa, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at the church.
