From staff reports
POSTED: December 21, 2009

ATHENS, Pa. - Juniata took home a pair of champions in addition to a team title at the Jarvis Wildcat Tournament at Athens High School Saturday.

Arty Walsh (119) and Zach Beitz (125) won gold medals for the Indians, who racked up a team score of 270, 38 more than second-place Pal-Mac, of New York.

Brandon Rowles (135), Seth Beitz (140) and Dan Fultz (285) got to their respective finals but fell.

Juniata is at the Conestoga Valley Tournament on Dec. 29.

Wrestling

Mount Union Sayre tournament

SAYRE - Mount Union's wrestling squad made it a perfect 5 for 5 at the Sayre dual meet tournament Saturday at Sayre High School.

The Trojans earned dual meet victories over Montrose (61-6), G.A.R. Memorial (62-9), Loyalsock Township (54-13) and a pair of New York schools - Waverly (47-21) and Corning (55-11).

Ryan Wilson (103, 112), Dylan Knable (112, 119), Cole Boozel (145), Keith Hoffmaster (152), Jacob Rowe (160) and Jamel Fortson (215) were undefeated on the day for Mount Union (6-0).

The Trojans are at Juniata Valley Tuesday.

Mustang Duals

MIDDLEBURG - Midd-West had a rough go of it while hosting the Mustang Duals Saturday.

The host team was 0 for 5 on the day, falling to Wallenpaupack (48-22), Montgomery (45-33), Elk Lake (49-25), Muncy (54-24) and Newport (47-26).

Midd-West (0-6) is at Mifflinburg Tuesday.

Indoor track and field

Franklin and Marshall High School Invitational

LANCASTER - Alex Monroe took first with a dominating performance in the boys 3,000-meter run and Patrick Knepp won the boys high jump for Indian Valley's indoor track and field team at the Franklin and Marshall High School Invitational Friday.

Monroe's time of 9:19 was close to his own school record in the event.

"Alex pretty much dominated the field," Indian Valley coach Scott Gantz said. "Coming off cross country season, it was pretty much expected that he would win but he pretty much lapped the field by the end of the race. He was dominant. He looked really good."

Knepp won with a jump of six feet.

"For Patrick, that was exceptional for his first meet," Gantz said. "That qualifies him for indoor states. To come out for your first time and clear six feet, that's great."

Michael Brode was second in the boys 55-meter dash.

Erin Bishop's 4-10 high jump was good for second in the girls event and the best finish by a Warrior female.

Indian Valley will compete at Kutztown University Jan. 16.
