From staff reports

TYRONE - Lewistown's opening night in the Mountain League did not go as well as the Panthers might have hoped - the Golden Eagles opened up what was a close game in the third quarter and held on for a 47-40 win.

The Panthers, who held a one-point lead at the break, were trailing 34-26 before fighting back to a two-point deficit late in the contest.

"Our conversion defense let us down once or twice," Lewistown coach Aaron Gingrich said.

The Panthers (2-1, 0-1) came up empty on several key possessions early, he explained, and the offense faced a strong man-to-man defense that was able to hold the visitors without getting too many contact calls.

"The bottom line is, it's difficult to win on the road against a good team in our league," Gingrich said. "We played well enough to compete but not well enough to win."

Dan Wheeler (11 points) and Mitch Welham (10) led the Lewistown scoring attack.

Girls basketball

Greenwood 55, Juniata 27

MIFFLINTOWN - Autumn Pellman scored 16 points and Greenwood enjoyed a runaway fourth quarter as the Wildcats handed Juniata a 55-27 loss in Tri-Valley girls basketball Monday.

Pellman was the only standout scorer on a team that spread the rest of the points among six other players, and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.

"She is very tough, no doubt about it. But we held her to six points at halftime," Juniata coach Meghan Geedey said. "Then they got a lot of other production. You have to focus on those people and she gets loose. We have trouble matching up with her."

The Indians, down 29-12 at the break, got the biggest boost in the game from Marnie Hart, who led her team with nine points.

"She had a nice game tonight. She finished some really nice drives for us. That ws a definite positive," Geedey said.

Juniata (0-3, 0-1) travels to Upper Dauphin Thursday.

Williamsburg 64, Mount Union 19

WILLIAMSBURG - Williamsburg was clicking on all cylinders Monday evening - a fact that spelled doom for the previously unbeaten Mount Union Trojans. The Blue Pirates won the Inter-County Conference opener by a 64-19 count.

"This will be their year to make a run," Trojans coach Mike Mittermeier said of Williamsburg. "They are good."

Katrina Woods led Mount Union with nine points.

The Trojans (2-1) welcome Bellwood-Antis on Wednesday night for their home opener.
