GRANVILLE - Ruth A. Smith, 78, a resident of The Malta Home, Granville, and formerly of 280 Crossover Drive, Lewistown, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at the home.

Born Feb. 26, 1931, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Robert R. Sr. and Margaret (Heffner) Cowan. Her husband, John P. Smith Sr., whom she married July 2, 1949, survives.

Also surviving: a son, John P. Smith Jr. and wife JoAnne, of McVeytown; brothers and sisters, Viola P. Danko, of McKean, Myron J. Cowan and wife Frances, of Lewistown, Robert R. Cowan Jr. and wife Iva, of Lewistown, James L. Cowan and wife Marjorie, of Newark, Del., Mary Jane Koontz and husband Gerald, of Lewistown and Debra P. Cowan, of Lewistown; a grandson, John P. Smith III and wife Brenda, of McVeytown; two great-grandchidlren, Cody and Kurtis and a stepgranddaughter, Briana.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melinda Jo Smith.

She worked in housekeeping at Lewistown Hospital for a number of years and was a homemaker.

She attended Maitland Church of the Brethren.

She was an avid reader.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Charles Eldredge officiating. Interment will be held at Maitland Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Monday until time of service at the funeral home.
