MIFFLINTOWN - A warrant has been issued for a Juniata County man recently charged in connection with the death of a passenger riding in his vehicle back in May.
Joshua S. Ranck, 21, of Thompsontown, faces one count of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol and other related charges, according to documents filed by Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown with Magisterial District Judge Barbara Lyter.
Ranck's charges stem from a one-vehicle crash that occurred on May 24 along state Route 2013 in Fayette Township. That crash claimed the life of 20-year-old Randall Jeremy Roberts, of Mifflin, who had been a passenger in the vehicle, according to court documents. Police allege Ranck was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident, and online court records indicate Ranck had not yet been taken into custody and arraigned before Lyter as of Tuesday afternoon.
According to documents, police arrived on the scene of the crash and found two people in the car -Ranck in the driver's seat and John Patrick Roberts, of Mifflin, in the front passenger seat. Ranck was flown to Hershey Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident, documents state.
Police said Randall Jeremy Roberts, the third occupant of the vehicle, was found underneath the car and pronounced dead at the scene. Juniata County Coroner Lee Snyder listed Roberts' cause of death as traumatic asphyxia with multiple blunt force injuries, documents state.
According to documents, police said the physical evidence observed at the scene indicated the car was traveling uphill and rounding a left curve in the roadway at the time of the crash. The vehicle slid out of control and struck an embankment and tree root, causing it to roll and hit a group of pine trees, documents state.
Police said a cardboard container for a 12-pack of Miller High Life beer and a few cans of Miller High Life beer were found in the rear of the car. Documents indicate the only occupant of the vehicle who was more than 21 years old at the time of the accident was John Patrick Roberts.
According to documents, police issued a search warrant to obtain a toxicology report for Ranck's blood alcohol content as part of their investigation. That report states that Ranck's BAC was found to be .222 percent - almost three times the legal limit.
Police said their investigation determined Ranck's vehicle was traveling between 64 to 70 mph along a stretch of the road where the speed limit recently had been changed to 55 mph.
