Eleanor Gilson Griebel

REEDSVILLE - Eleanor Gilson Griebel, 90, of Reedsville, died at 12:24 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at the home of her daughter.

Born Oct. 27, 1919, in Port Royal, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Nellie (Weimer) Gilson. Her husband, George W. Griebel, whom she married on Aug. 16, 1944, preceded her in death on March 20, 1971.

Surviving are three daughters, Georgia Gates and her husband Bill, of Bargersville, Ind., Roberta L. Griebel, of Reedsville, and Rebecca G. Hussey, of Lewistown, and she leaves behind seven grandchildren, Henry Waldschmidt, George Waldschmidt, Elizabeth McNulty, William Gates, Daniel Gates, Carissa Hussey, and Timothy Hussey, as well as four great-grandchildren.

One sister, Frances Lindemuth and one brother, Gerald Gilson, preceded her in death, making her the last of her immediate family.

Mrs. Griebel was a graduate of Port Royal High School, a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church, General Thomas Mifflin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of the Eastern Star, Mifflin Chapter No. 260, and was a former member of the Friendship Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary.

In earlier life she was employed at Westinghouse until her marriage, after which she became a homemaker.

Eleanor was an avid reader, and enjoyed doing crossword and word search puzzles. When her health permitted, she loved to knit, and was very meticulous about taking care of her home and family, also she held a special love for dogs.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, 111 East Third Street, Lewistown, with the Rev. Michael Bailey and the Rev. Paul Carter officiating. Interment will be private, and held in the Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
