Police: Driver died after being ejected

Passenger listed in critical condition at Altoona hospital

LEWISTOWN - More detailed were released about an early morning accident on Thursday that claimed the life of a Lewistown man.

Christopher S. Burke, 38, of 78 Logan St., was killed when the vehicle he was driving overturned at about 1:50 a.m. on Thursday on U.S. 522 South, ejecting him and a passenger, Rachel Stroup, 21, of Burnham, from the vehicle, Granville Township Police report.

Police said the accident is still under investigation and they currently do not have any eyewitness accounts of the accident, which was called into Mifflin County Communications when another driver came upon the accident scene.

A release from the Mifflin County Coroner's Office states Burke was pronounced dead at 2:55 a.m. at the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Chief Deputy Coroner Barbara Barker said Burke died of multiple blunt force trauma.

Stroup was flown to Altoona Regional Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition as of press time Thursday, hospital officials said.

Police also were assisted at the scene by City Hook and Ladder and Highland Park fire departments along with Derry Township Fire Police.
