LEWISTOWN - An unofficial tally of votes cast on Tuesday name Republican Janice Peachey as the winner of the race for the Mifflin County Treasurer's office.
Peachey took 4,994 votes while Democrat Joan North secured 2,560 of the votes cast countywide for treasurer.
"I want to thank my Republican and Democratic friends and supporters who entrusted me with their vote," Peachey said. "I want to thank my Lord for his faithfulness in giving me this opportunity to serve the citizens of Mifflin County and I will endeavor to have the utmost integrity and honesty in the office."
The race for Mifflin County treasurer was marked with a few unusual circumstances. During the primary election in May, voters nominated Reedsville resident A. Reed Hayes as the Democratic candidate for the position. However, on Sept. 10, Hayes passed away, leaving a vacancy on the ballot that was later filled by North.
Also, on Sept. 25, the Mifflin County Republican Committee filed a petition to have North removed from the November ballot, and then several days later filed a motion to withdraw that petition.
According to court documents, the petition listed several issues in regard to North's nomination, including she was already nominated during the May primary as the Democratic candidate for Burnham Borough tax collector and also had secured the Republican nomination through write-in votes.
