MIFFLINTOWN - Robert M. "Bob" Schlegel, 79, of Mifflintown, died at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at his home.
Born on May 7, 1930, in Port Royal, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Ralph W. and Anna Jane (Dunn) Schlegel. His wife of more than 54 years, Betty J. (Benner) Schlegel, whom he married on Aug. 7, 1955, survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa J. Becker and her husband Michael, of Mifflintown; three siblings, Mona Jury, of Mifflintown, Gerald E. Schlegel, of Mexico, Pa., Donna Lou Fogleman, of Harrisburg, and he leaves behind two grandsons, Brandon Becker and Ethan Becker.
One brother, Carl L. Schlegel Sr. and one sister, Doris Stoner, preceded him in death.
Mr. Schlegel attended the First Baptist Church of Mifflintown, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Bob was a truck driver for many local companies, including W.S. Clark, W.H. Manbeck and Company, Hawstone Brick, Wolf Furniture, C.D. Zimmerman, and Shuman Wright, until retiring from Agway in 1992.
After retiring, Bob assisted with funeral services for the Brown Funeral Homes Inc. of Mifflintown and McAlisterville.
In service to his community, Bob was elected to two terms on the Mifflintown Borough Council, serving from 1965 to 1973.
While his health permitted, Bob loved to hunt and was an avid antique car buff. His affable nature allowed him to strike up a conversation with anyone.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with Pastor Ronald Shupe and Pastor Phillip Persing officiating. Interment will follow in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at the funeral home.
