L. Mildred ‘Mid’ Renno

BELLEVILLE - L. Mildred "Mid" Renno, 100, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, died at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Valley View.

Born November 18, 1908, in Belleville, she was the daughter of the late John Y. Hartzler and Fannie (Kauffman) Hartzler. Her husband, Jesse L. Renno, whom she married on June 24, 1944, preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1951.

She is survived by one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law, Paul and Anna Mary Renno, of Belleville, as well as several special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary L. Dumm; two brothers-in-law, Harry Dumm and Erie Renno; and a sister-in-law, Verna Renno.

She was a graduate of Belleville High School, class of 1926. After high school, she attended Juniata College until she began teaching in Nov. 1926, in Union Township. She later attended Elizabethtown College for two terms in the summer, in order to receive her teaching certificate.

"Mid" taught first through eighth grades until the schoolhouse was struck by fire in 1946. She discontinued teaching for a period of 20 years, until 1966 when she returned to teach kindergarten at Burnham school. She retired in 1972.

She was a member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville. She also was a loyal sponsor of young children in Jordan, specifically assisting two young men with their college education. She enjoyed making teddy bears and knitting throws for Mennonite Central Committee. Additionally, her hobbies included bird watching, bird sculpting, ceramics, painting, and using a potter's wheel.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Valley View Haven Chapel, Belleville, with Pastor Alan Kauffman and Associate Pastor Herb Zook officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Locust Grove Cemetery, Belleville.

Arrangements are under the care of Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville.
