Berube’s expands business into Juniata County

By Marjorie Stromberg, Sentinel reporter, mstromberg@lewistownsentinel.com
POSTED: October 15, 2009

MIFFLINTOWN - Berube's Crystal Clear Water in Lewistown has opened an additional office in Mifflintown as a way to provide a beneficial service to the residents of Juniata County.

Bob Neff, owner with wife Stephanie, said his grandfather, Pat Berube, founded the business in 1992 at its location on Electric Avenue in Lewistown. His uncle took over the business after Berube, and then Neff and his wife took over this past September, he said.

"I'm the third generation to run this business under this reputable name," he said.

The Mifflintown location's grand opening was held last week, Neff said. Berube's also has a location in Belleville that opened around 1999, he added.

Neff said he decided to open the third location because he received numerous calls and requests from Mifflintown to deliver water.

"There was an interest in that area," he said.

Neff said the extra location will benefit the people who live in the Mifflintown area in a variety of ways.

"(It offers) health benefits, especially," he said about the water.

The Mifflintown office will not bring any additional jobs to the area, Neff said, because it is an unmanned location.

Neff said all of Berube's locations are opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The business takes municipal water and puts it through a reverse osmosis filtration system, which removes chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals, he said. And then the water, which is made fresh every day at all locations, is sold.

According to a brochure by Berube's, the business uses an eight-stage water purification system. The system utilizes: several particle sediment filtration processes to the micron level; multi-carbon bed filtration systems; reverse osmosis; and ultraviolet lights.

"Our multi-step water purification system successfully removes chemicals, contaminates and microorganisms from the local municipal water source, such as chlorine, fluoride, acid rain, pesticides, nitrates, manganese ... and bacteria," the brochure states.

Berube's is regulated by the Department of Environmental Protection and is required to be tested every month, the brochure indicates.

In terms of future goals and additional expansions, Neff said that as of now, "we want to get this up, and going and see how we can promote that area."

The Mifflintown office is located on state Route 34 in the Butchershop Road Plaza.
