Chief:?Sunday’s fire began with overheated light fixture
By Megan Bollinger, Sentinel reporter, mbollinger@lewistownsentinel.comBURNHAM - A Burnham woman and her 4-month-old child were among the displaced after fire damaged their apartment on Sunday evening along Seventh Avenue in Burnham.
Burnham Fire Department Chief Bill McCurry said the woman, whose identity was not immediately known, smelled smoke coming from the bathroom of her apartment at around 10 p.m. and when she entered the bathroom, she saw flames coming from the closet area.
McCurry said the woman took her child and immediately fled the apartment while calling 911 for help. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Burnham along with Reedsville, Yeagertown, East Derry, Highland Park, Junction and City Hook and Ladder fire departments and Fame EMS responded to the scene.
The woman's apartment sustained an estimated $30,000 to $35,0000 in damage, mainly in the bathroom and kitchen area, McCurry said. An apartment located next to the woman's apartment also sustained smoke and minor water damage, displacing two adults, he said. Both apartments were on the second floor of the building with a garage below.
An investigation into the incident revealed the fire originated from an overheated light fixture in a closet in the bathroom, McCurry said.
The American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley is assisting the adults and child with food, clothing and shelter, according to a release issued on Monday.
