Commissioners approve new grant application

LEWISTOWN - The Mifflin County Commissioners gave approval on Thursday for the county to apply for a grant to aid in the operation of the Mifflin County Day Reporting Center.
The grant, the third in a series, is in the amount of $38,397, and will be used to help offset the costs of the day-to-day operations of the center.
Mifflin County Commissioner Mark Sunderland said the day reporting center is assigned to people convicted of lesser offenses.
"These are people who come to the center to report to probation as opposed to incarceration," Sunderland explained. "They report once a week. The center also offers job search help and such. It's an effort to get them back as productive members of society."
In other business Thursday, the commissioners adopted a proclamation honoring HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital of Pleasant Gap, which is celebrating National Rehabilitation Week the week of Sept. 20 to 26. The resolution encourages all citizens of Mifflin County to renew their commitment to people with disabilities and to recognize the importance of building independence through rehabilitation, and the efforts of rehabilitative medicine improving the quality of life.
In other action Thursday, the commissioners:
Approved a resolution authorizing the chairman and chief clerk to sign the Highway Safety Patrol Grant, which will be used for the Sobriety Checkpoint and Expanded DUI/Underage Drinking Enforcement program.
Approved the appointment of Christina Calkins-Mazur of Lewistown to a five-year term on the Mifflin County Industrial Development Authority.
Approved the re-appointment of James Walters to another five-year term on the Mifflin County Industrial Development Authority.
Approved the re-appointment Robert Reck to another two-year term on the Seven Mountains Emergency Medical Service Council.
Approved the appointment of Randi Warner to a two-year term on the Seven Mountains Emergency Medical Service Council.
Approved a purchase of service agreement for use, if needed, by Children & Youth and Probation with Glade Run Lutheran Services of Zelienople, PA.
Approved a purchase of service agreement for use, if needed, by Children & Youth with Commonwealth Affiliates of Harrisburg.
