Bertha M. Kanagy
BELLEVILLE - Bertha M. Kanagy, 83, of 21 Log Hollow, Belleville died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at her home.
Born May 18, 1926, in Belleville she was a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Fannie (Swarey) Kauffman. Her husband, Chester J. Kanagy, whom she married March 6, 1948, preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2006.
Bertha is survived by her children, Sharon Green, Carolyn French and husband Gary, and James Kanagy and wife Sharlene, all of Belleville; two grandsons, Timothy Kanagy and wife Kolby and Tyler Kanagy; four stepgrandchildren, Brian French and wife Amy, Rob French, Regina Sitch and husband Ken, and Lisa Horst and husband Darryl; and two sisters, Sadie Hartzler, of Mill Creek and Malinda Sharp, of Belleville.
There also were a number of other special people who called her 'Mom.'
She was preceded in death by two brother-in-laws, Martin Hartzler and Crist Sharp.
Bertha was a homemaker who served the Lord faithfully through the years as her husband pastored at Mill Run Mennonite Church and at Rockville Mennonite Church.
She was a member of Beth-El Mennonite Church. She taught Sunday school and Bible school classes at Mill Run, Otelia, and Rockville churches.
Through all her years she was an active member of the sewing circle and liberally gave of herself to her husband, children, grandsons, friends and church family. Bertha will be greatly missed by all whom she loved.
Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Beth-El Mennonite Church with Bishop Foster King and Ministers Wesley King and Raymond Peachey officiating. Burial will take place immediately following at Allensville Mennonite Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church.
