TROY, N.Y. - The State College Spikes could not withstand a pair of four-run innings as they dropped their second game in a row to the Tri-City ValleyCats, 10-4, at Joseph Bruno Stadium on Wednesday night.
State College (13-13) was led on offense by Brock Holt's two hits, including a double, and two runs scored. Kyle Morgan knocked in a pair of runs to aid the Spikes' effort as well, giving him eight runs batted in over the last two games in which he has played.
Tri-City (8-15) jumped on the board with four runs in the third inning, after four straight singles and an error. The ValleyCats then scored another run in the fifth before another four runs in the sixth inning put the game away.
State College starter Tyler Cox (3-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks over five innings of work. Cox also struck out four in the effort.
Wander Alvino (2-1) earned the victory for Tri-City after a seven-inning start in which he allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.
The Spikes' loss stopped their streak of four straight series wins stretching back to the beginning of July.
Thursday night, State College and Tri-City finish their three-game set at Joseph Bruno Stadium with a 7 p.m. start time. The Spikes will send right-hander Jason Erickson (1-0) to the mound for his second professional start as he takes on ValleyCats right-hander Brandt Walker (1-1).
