LEWISTOWN - Four different players won awards for their regular season performances in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League for 2009.

Gary Stimely, league president, made the announcement today. The players will be given their awards in between games of the opening round of the District 7 Babe Ruth tournament Saturday at the Armagh Memorial Field.

Named as the league's Most Valuable Player was Hunter Walker of league champion Lewistown. Walker hit .512 for the West as he had 42 hits in 82 at bats. The 15-year-old had nine doubles and knocked in 28 runs.

On the mound, Walker appeared in nine games and had a 7-0 record. He pitched in 36 innings and had 43 strike outs and walked 23. He also picked up one save.

Walker is the fourth West player to win the MVP. The last to do it was Kirby Moist last summer.

Named the league's Outstanding Pitcher was Tyson Searer of Strodes Mills. Searer, a 15-year-old, had a 6-2 record with one save. Searer struck out 100, walked 37 and gave up 47 hits in 61 innings.

Searer is just the third pitcher from Strodes Mills to win the Outstanding Pitching Award. The last Strodes Mills hurler to win the award was Brian Fisher in 1989.

Winning the batting title for 2009 was the West's Ted Wilson. Wilson, a 15-year-old, was 36 for 64 for a .563 average. Included in those 36 hits were eight doubles, a triple and a home run.

It marked the fourth time that a Lewistown player has won a Mifflin County batting title. Moist was the last to win one in 2008.

Winning the John Howe Sportsmanship Award was Belleville's Dalton L. Long, a 15-year-old.

The oldest award is the batting title, which was established in 1970 and is in its 40th year. The Outstanding Pitching Award was established in 1974 and the Most Valuable Player Award came in 1973.

For the first time in the history of the league it will give an "Honorary" Sportsmanship Award.

Nate Swineford of Burnham and Matt Chester of Belleville will receive "Honorary" Sportsmanship Awards for their work as Eagle Scouts. Both young men are former players in the league. Swineford played from 2004-2007, while Chester just got done playing, 2007-2009.

Swineford helped fixed up the field in Burnham in the fall of 2006 and the fall of 2007. He worked on the dugouts for the home team and the visitors and also worked on the building that houses the team's equipment and rest rooms.

Chester help put up the new set of bleachers at the Belleville complex. The bleachers set in between the home dugout and the new press box and it gives the Belleville field a stadium feel.

Both Chester and Swineford won Eagle Scout Awards for their work on the Babe Ruth fields.
