West win streak is still alive

LEWISTOWN - A double play is called a twin killing and it can strangle the life out of a ball club.

On Monday night, Lewistown turned two double plays late in the game to persevere an 8-5 victory over Strodes Mills in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League.

Lewistown remained undefeated at 25-0 and now has a 41 game winning streak as it heads into todays's matchup with Burnham. Burnham, the second-place team in the league at 19-6, has given the West two big battles, losing 4-3 in eight innings and 9-6.

Both of those games were at Rec Park. Tonight's game will be at Burnham at 6 p.m.

The player involved in both double plays on Monday was Mitch Welham. Strodes Mills had scored four times in the fifth and had runners on first and third with one out and the score 8-5.

Caleb Rhodes lined a shot at Welham at third who stepped on third and threw to first for a double play. Then in the seventh, Welham went to the mound. He got Seth Stewart to ground out to start the inning, but Owen Craig singled to keep Strodes Mills' hopes alive. Tyson Searer then grounded back to Welham, now on the mound, who turned and threw to second forcing Craig and then Evan Pupo made the relay to first getting Searer and ending the game.

Strodes Mills jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning as it pounded out four hits against Kody Smeltz. Owen Craig, Searer and Colton Craig all singled and Rhodes doubled home a run.

Searer was doing the pitching for Strodes Mills and he kept the West off the scoreboard for two innings. The West, to its credit, had a hit in every inning and finished with 14 hits.

Lewistown went ahead in the third inning on two hits. The West's first run was manufactured by playing small ball. Hunter Walker had an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Pupo and scored on a wild pitch. Cole Welham knocked in the second run with a base hit.

The West kept adding to its total with two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. Trevor Peachey knocked in both runs in the fourth with a single. In the fifth, two Lewistown runs scored on errors and another on a balk. Welham had the only RBI of the inning with a single.

After the first inning, Smeltz settled down and retired 10 men in a row, before struggling in the fifth.

Strodes Mills scored four times on four hits. Avery Craig had a three run double and Owen Craig knocked in a run with a fielder's choice.

Then came the first Welham double play, ending the rally. In the sixth, Smeltz had a 1-2-3 inning.

Strodes Mills finished with eight hits as Owen and Colton Craig each had two hits.

Ted Wilson had a three hit night for Lewistown and Pupo, Chris Wilson, Cole Welham and Mitch Welham each had two hits.

Searer struck out five and walked only two. Rhodes threw out two runners at second base from his catcher's position.

Smeltz struck out five and walked only one. Cy Treaster, the West catcher, threw out one runner in the first inning that kept Strodes Mills to just one run on four hits.

Burnham 10, Milroy 0

BURNHAM - Burnham rebounded from its 12-10 loss to Belltown on Sunday with a 10-0 win over Milroy on Monday in five innings.

Dylan Ritter went the distance and only gave up two hits. He struck out five and walked just two.

Burnham had eight different players get hits and nine different players scored. Burnham's only extra base hit came from John Stundon, a triple.

Burnham scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to wrap up the game. Tim Beck and Michael Zoppetti each had singles and three runs scored on Milroy errors. Ryan Powell's RBI single ended the game. Powell was the only Burnham player with two RBIs.

Both of Milroy's hits came in the third inning from Jordan Treaster and Tanner Kibe. Milroy loaded the bases that inning, but failed to score.

Belleville 12, McVeytown 2

BELLEVILLE - Belleville scored six times in the bottom of the fifth inning to wrap up a 12-2 win over McVeytown Monday night.

Belleville, which now has won three in a row, scored six times on two hits from Matt Chester and Lucas White. McVeytown gave up three walks in the inning and also had four errors.

White went the distance for Belleville. The Belleville 14-year-old struck out eight, walked one and gave up four hits.

White also had a big day with the bat getting three hits. Kyle Kenepp, a 13-year-old, had a solo home run to open the third inning.

Cody Donaldson had two of McVeytown's four hits. The other two came from Nick Casner and Derek Heimbach.

Yeagertown 11, Belltown 6

BELLTOWN - Dylan Kauffman had a big day on the mound and also hit a home run in Yeagertown's 11-6 win over Belltown Monday.

Kauffman pitched seven innings, struck out 17, walked eight and gave up two hits. Belltown had four hits, but the other two came off of Matty Knode.

Kauffman hit a solo home run in the sixth inning giving Yeagertown its last run of the day.

Yeagertown scored five times in the third inning as Kyle Bodtorf, Issac Strohecker and Aaron Hubbler each had singles.

Belltown's only extra-base hit came from Hunter Wray, a double in the fourth inning. Belltown's other hits were singles from Brendon Fultz, Michea Wolfley and Addison Monore.

Beaver Springs 5, Reedsville 4

BEAVER SPRINGS - The sixth inning was wild in the Beaver Springs-Reedsville game Monday night. When the dust cleared in the sixth, Beaver Springs had a 5-4 win.

Reedsville scored twice in the top of the sixth to tie the game at four. Jeremy Koller, who finished with two hits, tripled home Jack Wagner, who had walked. Koller then scored on an Alex Hughes single.

Beaver Spring came right back in the bottom of the inning with a run that turned out to be the difference. Travis Fisher walked and then Alex Lash doubled him home.

Tyler Wilson went the first two innings for the Springs. He struck out one, walked one and gave two hits.

Fisher finished for Beaver Springs and got the win. The Beaver Springs 15-year-old struck out eight, walked five and gave up three hits.

Brady Specht went the distance for Reedsville striking out eight and giving up five hits.

Lash had two of the five Beaver Springs hits.
