Belltown upsets second-place Burnham
By RAY WILDE, Sentinel correspondentBELLTOWN - Last year the Belltown fans had a lot to cheer about as their team was in contention for the Mifflin County Babe Ruth title.
This summer it has been a rebuilding year and Belltown had only seven wins going into Sunday night's game with second-place Burnham.
But the cheering was loud and clear on Sunday as Belltown pulled off one of the major upsets of the season beating Burnham, 12-10.
Luke Bender pitched the final five innings giving up just two runs and one hit. At one point in the game Burnham led 10-1. Bender, who got the win, struck out three, walked three and gave up just the one hit - a third-inning double to Ryan Powell.
Burnham got most of its hits in the game's first two innings. Burnham scored three times in the first on a trio of singles from Colton Schreck, Seth Wagner and Dakoda Wilson.
In the second inning Burnham put up five runs on four hits including a double by Wagner and three singles from Schreck, Cullen Russler and Scotty Durst.
Belltown scored a single run in the third, but in the fourth came up big with seven tallies - an inning that saw Belltown sent 10 batters to the plate.
Five of those batters came up with hits. Addison Monore had the only extra-base hit in the inning, a double. The singles came from Tory Mills, Brendon Fultz, Nik Christine and Bender.
Trailing 10-9, Belltown scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to take the leadby sending nine batters to the plate. There were three walks and two hits as Christine had an RBI single and Michea Wolfley also had a base hit.
Dakota Macknair reached on a fielder's choice that scored Fultz, who earlier in the inning had reached on an error.
Christine scored the 12th run on a passed ball.
Belleville 7, Strodes Mills 6
BELLEVILLE - Belleville edged Strodes Mills, 7-6 Sunday night despite allowing the first three batters of the first two innings to reach base.
These last two games have been brutal for Strodes Mills as it has lost two one-run games in a three-day period. On Friday, Strodes Mills fell to Burnham, 3-2, in eight innings.
In one-run games, Strodes Mills is 1-5 for the 2009 season.
It started out all so well for Strodes Mills on Sunday. Belleville didn't give up a hit in the first inning and Strodes Mills scored three times.
Owen Craig walked and Tyson Searer was hit by a pitch. Avery Craig reached on a fielder's choice and two throwing errors allowed Owen Craig and Searer to score. Avery Craig scored on a wild pitch.
In the second, Strodes Mills made it 6-1 as Owen Craig singled with one out and Searer followed with another base hit. Avery Craig singled home a run. The Strodes Mills pulled off a double steal as Avery Craig went to second and Searer scored from third base.
Avery Craig came home on a single by Colton Craig.
But from that point on Belleville hurler Josh Rosefsky only allowed four hits and no runs. He finsihed with 10 strikeouts.
The Belleville defense tighted up after the second inning. With one out in the sixth, Owen Craig walked and went to second on a passed ball that was also ball four. With first base open, Belleville manager, Bill Corbin, elected to intentionally walk Searer, who already had two hits. Avery Craig flew out to left field, but when Colton Craig lashed a single to center it looked like the game was going to be tied at 7.
But, Dalton L. Long made a perfect throw from center to gun down Owen Craig at the plate.
Belleville ended the game with a double play in the seventh as Strodes Mills had a runner on first with one out, but a liner to Rodney Patterson at shortstop, who tossed to first getting the Strodes Mills runner to end the game.
In the first, Belleville scored a run on two hits and a Strodes Mills error. Kyle Kenepp, who smashed two extra base hits against Milroy on Friday, rapped a double in the first inning.
Belleville kept chipping away at the 6-1 lead. In the second, it scored three times as Dyson Marks ripped a two run triple and another run scored on an error.
In the fourth, Belleville took the lead 7-6 on three hits and two walks. Marks had his third RBI of the game with a base hit and Lucas White drove in two runs with a single.

Mifflin County 8, Northern Tier Rookies 5 (8 inn.)
Northern Tier Rookies 7, Mifflin County 3
KERSEY - Mifflin County's AAABA team picked up a split of a Sunday doubleheader with the Northern Tier Rookies, winning the first game 8-5 in eight innings while falling in Game 2 by a 7-3 score.
Mifflin County put up three runs in the top of the eighth inning when Cameron Rhoades and David Bender slapped back-to-back singles to break the tie.
Nick Pupo was one of four Mifflin County players with a mulitple hit game in the first contest, leading the team with a 3-for-5 game. Dustin Lewis, Rhoades and Bender each had a pair of hits for Mifflin County.
Rhoades also picked up the win on the mound in the first game.
The second game was much different as the locals managed just four hits, scattered among four different players.
Mifflin County (3-5) will host DuBois for a Saturday doubleheader at Armagh Memorial Field in Milroy.
