BELLTOWN - Belltown's Kyle Heane went half way acorss the country doing something that he love's to do, playing baseball.
Heane, a sophomore, is a pitcher for Alleghany Community College in Cumberland, Md. His team qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series in Enid, Okla.
This will mark the ninth time that Alleghany has gone to a World Series and second time in the past three years.
Alleghany was ranked eighth in the country going into the World Series. Other teams at the 10-team tournament are Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, Des Moines (Iowa) Community, LSU Euice, Kankakee (Ill.) Community College, Parkland (Ill.) College, Kellogg (Mich.) Community College, Western Oklahoma Community College, Lurleen B. Wallace (Ala.) Community College and Monore (N.Y.) Community College.
Alleghany opened play with a 4-3 win over Kellogg on Saturday. Heane pitched in the a 14-9 loss to Parkland on Monday, going three innings, gave up six hits and five runs, walked one and struck out two. Allegany was eliminated by Kankekee, 7-5, on Tuesday. The tournament was double elimination.
Heane had a 4-2 record for Alleghany in the regular season.
The Belltown native played four years for Indian Valley and was a pitcher for the Warriors. Heane was in the class of 2007.
He played American Legion baseball for West Snyder and was a three time All-Star in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League. He was on the 2003 14-year-old All-Star team that won a state championship and finished second in the Mid-Atlantic Regional.
The following season as a 15-year-old, Heane was a key pitcher on the Mifflin County All-Star team that won the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship and played in the World Series in Longview, Wash.
