MIFFLINTOWN - Henry E. Carter, 79, of RR 1, Mifflintown, died at 6:20 a.m., on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born March 29, 1929, in Port Richmond, Va., he was a son of the late Russell W. and Marion E. (Clawson) Carter. His wife of nearly 58 years, Betty J. (Switzer) Carter, whom he married on Nov. 24, 1950, survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Henrietta C. Brennar and her husband John, of RR 1, Mifflintown, Virginia "Ginger" C. Dilley and her husband Scott, of Mechanicsburg, Charlie H. Carter and his wife Morine, of Liverpool; two brothers, Carroll Carter, of West Point, Va. and Larry Carter, of Locust Hill, Va.; two sisters, Susan Boughton, of West Point, Va. and Ruby Jones, of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Danielle Phelps, Laura Orehowsky, Kayla Markle, Karen Carter, Abby Carter; and two great grandchildren, Vaughn Phelps and Addison Orehowsky.

Three half-brothers, Earl Russell Carter, Milton Carter, Elick Carter and two sisters, Linda Peyton and Marion E. Carter, preceded him in death.

He was a 1948 graduate of West Point High School, where he was well known as an outstanding football player and later graduated from Woodrow Wilson Trade School, Staunton, Va.

He was a WWII United States Air Force veteran.

In earlier life, he was employed by the former Switzer Chevrolet Oldsmobile, Mifflintown and later retired as a finish carpenter for Marlette Mobile Homes, Lewistown.

Mr. Carter was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown, the Juniata Sportsman's Association and the Senior Citizens Swimming program at the Burnham YMCA.

Henry was an avid football fan and loved being in the outdoors, spending time gardening, hunting, fishing, and trapping. He also enjoyed doing Sudoku puzzles.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2008, from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc. 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with the Rev. Michael Leedom officiating. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.

Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2008 from the funeral home.
