Cabin fire investigated
Bratton Township camp burns, police call blaze ‘suspicious’
POSTED: June 2, 2008
MATTAWANA — A fire that destroyed a cabin near Wynn Gap Road in Bratton Township is being investigated as suspicious, Mifflin County Regional Police report.
Police said initial calls to the Mifflin County and Juniata County communications centers reported a cabin on fire, which led authorities to believe multiple cabins had been damaged by fires.
However, when firefighters and officers responded to the area, it was determined that only one cabin was burning, said William Herkert, Mifflin County Regional Police chief.
“Fortunately, there was only one cabin involved,” Herkert said. “Initially we thought there might be a bigger area involved.”
Firefighters battled the blaze, which caused “extensive” damage to the cabin, police said.
The cabin, which has no utilities running to it, had last been checked by its owner about a week ago, Herkert said.
A fire investigator from the department, as well as officers from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are investigating the blaze, Herkert said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Scott Mauery at 248-1900, ext. 628.
Police said they were assisted at the scene by the McVeytown Fire Co., Newton Hamilton Fire Co., West Granville Fire Co. and the Granville Fire Co.
