Tom Mayes
LEWISTOWN — Tom Mayes, 76 of Burgard Apts., died at 1:20 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Golden Living Center-William Penn.
Born May 7, 1932, in Burnham, he was the son of the late John Oliver Mayes Sr. and Alma Amanda (Sprankle) Mayes.
Surviving are: children, Vicki L. Fultz, Burnham, Bea Burke, Harrisburg, Nancy J. Wilt, Burnham, Daniel S. Mayes and his wife Lisa, Fayetteville, and David M. Mayes and his wife, Cathy, Pine Grove; siblings, Samuel Mayes and his wife, Irene, Burnham, and Mary Grace McKee and her husband, Bill, of Burnham; three sisters-in-law, Betty, Jo and Ginny Mayes; 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, James C. Mayes; brothers, Don, Jack, and James Mayes; a sister, Doris Leeper; and a brother-in-law, Joe Leeper.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict.
He was a Protestant by faith. He was the first male hair stylist in Lewistown. He owned and operated Tom Mayes Hair Salon and then was a partner in Mayes and Wagner Beauty Shop. He also drove truck for UPS and Noerr’s Trucking.
He was a member of the Brooklyn Hose Company, City Hook and Ladder, VFW Post 7011 and the Milroy American Legion.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in St. Mark’s Cemetery.
