Hollidaysburg runs past Indian Valley

From staff reports
POSTED: May 16, 2008

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Hollidaysburg got six runs over the final four innings of the game to pull away from Indian Valley and pick up a 9-3 non-league baseball win Thursday.

Jarrett Kratzer took the loss on the mound, but Warriors coach Travis Zook was pleased with his hurler’s effort.

“I thought Jarrett Kratzer threw a good game,” he said. “He threw four innings and did a good job of moving the ball around the strike zone. The runs he gave up were on some fielding miscues. Our defense was a little shaky, but usually our offense will back us up a bit.”

The Warriors had the offense early as a two-run homer from Ryan Keefer in the second inning sailed over the center-field fence to pull Indian Valley even at 2-2 with Hollidaysburg after an inning and a half.

Indian Valley took the lead in the third when Jay Hartman singled and took two bases on a pair of wild pitches. Devon Pearson hit a sac fly to center that brought home the go-ahead Warrior run.

It would be all the offense that Indian Valley would enjoy as the Golden Tigers scored the final seven runs to win going away.

“I was disappointed with our effort today,” Zook said. “I think after the Lewistown game we had some motivational issues.”

Indian Valley (12-4)

plays at 4:30 p.m. at State

College today.

Baseball

Loyalsock 5, Midd-West 2

MIDDLEBURG — Loyalsock’s three-run sixth inning broke open a close game and gave it a 5-2 non-league win over Midd-West Tuesday in Middleburg.

“They just had three straight hits and we had two errors that inning,” Midd-West coach Vince Keister said.

Midd-West took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Miller reached on an error and was then sacrificed to second. Miller tried to take third and the throw was errant, allowing him

to score and give the

Mustangs the lead.

Midd-West remained scoreless until the sixth inning when James McCloskey singled home Steve Brouse.

It was all the Mustangs would get as they fell to 11-9 (9-7) on the year.

“We made a few mistakes,” Keister said. “Mentally, we just didn’t get the job done tonight.”

Midd-West will play its first District game Wednesday night against an opponent yet to be determined.

Softball

Penns Valley 6, Indian Valley 5

SPRING MILLS — Greg Evans feels as if his Indian Valley softball team has run the gauntlet leading

up to districts.

The gauntlet ended with a 6-5 loss Thursday at Penns Valley.

“Anybody that knows the (Mountain) League knows the teams we play are great-caliber teams,” Evans said. “We’ve lost to some good teams and Penns Valley is one of the better teams in the league.”

Indian Valley sent freshman Dani Treaster to the circle, who impressed her coach.

“Treaster did a good job of pitching against a good team like Penns Valley,” Evans said. “We had some errors in there that gave them some runs.”

Indian Valley got a big night offensively from Shannon Lamberson who had a two-hit game, including a home run.

“Shannon has continually hit for us throughout the season,” Evans said. “She is probably hitting well over .400, if not .500. She has hit in all of our games and against all calibers of teams. The home run was a big shot in the arm for us at the time, but she’s been really doing a good job of putting the bat on the ball and it’s been consistent. Her senior leadership is one reason why we’re going to the playoffs.”

Indian Valley (10-8) will host Forest Hills in round one of the District 6 playoffs Monday in Highland Park.
