Fegley’s two RBIs key Midd-West victory

MIDDLEBURG — McKenzi Herbster reached on a fielder’s choice and Kristy Fegley drove her home — Fegley’s second RBI of the game — lifting Midd-West to a 3-2 win over East Juniata in Tri-Valley League softball Wednesday.

Fegley’s RBI single negated a two-run comeback effort by the Tigers in the top of the sixth. In that inning, East Juniata’s Alyssa Flaherty walked to open and advanced when Carly Inch was issued a pass. Taty Chubb followed the second walk with a base hit. Rachel Stimeling and Talena Truitt each had RBIs to even the score.

“Nothing’s ever easy, especially for us. We always want to do it the hard way,” Midd-West coach Roger Snook said. “We had the timely hits tonight. When they were rallying, we could have gone in the tank but we held it together. That’s what you’ve got to do.”

Midd-West scored in the opening stanza when Dani Werner, who earned the win in the circle, got on base and Fegley brought her around. In the fifth, Gracie Kratzer reached on an error and was plated by Emilee Wagner for what seemed at the time to be the insurance run.

“We gave two unearned runs in the game, and made a couple base running mistakes one inning. We had a chance to win. As a coach, that’s all you can ask for,” East Juniata skipper Bill Treaster said.

This was the final regular-season contest for both clubs. Midd-West is awaiting confirmation that Jersey Shore will be the Mustangs’ first opponent in the District 4 Class AAA playoffs.

Softball

Hollidaysburg 4, Juniata 2

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Amanda Shaffer went 3-for-3 at the plate, but that was the high point for Juniata, which ended the regular season in a 4-2 non-league loss to Hollidaysburg.

The Golden Tigers opened up with a pair of runs in the first, and never let the Indians get closer than a tie.

“It a very well played game. They’re a very good team, probably the best defensive and best hitting team we’ve seen,” Juniata coach Brian Strawser said. “Their shortstop made a couple unbelievable plays . Every time we hit the ball hard they had somebody there.”

Juniata ends the campaign with a school-record 16 wins against three losses. The Indians will take on Kutztown May 22 in the first round of the District 3 Class AA playoffs, at a site and time to be determined.

Baseball

Juniata 14, Benton 0

BENTON — Juniata’s trip to Columbia County was productive, at least for Nathan Pray and Caleb Shertzer.

The duo each belted a home run — Shertzer’s was a grand slam — against Benton en route to a 14-0, non-league win in five innings.

Jim Krinjeck picked up the win on the mound.

“I was surprised at how ready they were to play after last night,” Juniata coach Bruce Wilson said. “The kids are relaxed. They can play with a little less on the line.”

Juniata has one more regular season game, a non-league tilt against State College at home today. Juniata will take on Littlestown in the first round of the District 3 Class AA tournament Monday at a site and time to be determined.
