McClure restaurant reopens

McCLURE — The town of McClure is now home to a new restaurant with a well-known reputation.

Owner Joe Pannizzo, of Lewistown, is the former owner of Burnham OIP and other pizza shops in Mifflin County. He and his brother, Frank, opened their first restaurant on the square in Lewistown in 1977, Joe Pannizzo said.

In the past thirty years, the brothers opened Italian restaurants in Belleville, Reedsville, Milroy, Lock Haven and at the current location in McClure, Pannizzo said.

In 1990, the brothers opened the McClure restaurant and ran it for several years, eventually selling the location to other businessmen, he said.

“Several people opened (the restaurant), (but) with no success,” Pannizzo explained.

The building remained empty for several years until the brothers decided it was time to take a break from their Burnham business.

Last year, when Frank announced his intention to retire, Joe decided to make some changes, he said.

“I decided not to take over Burnham by myself. It was time for me to slow down, too,” he said.

So, he sold the Burnham restaurant and moved the business to small-town McClure.

While the community is smaller, the restaurant is almost the same, Pannizzo said.

“It’s the same food, the same quality,” he said.

The McClure restaurant menu is smaller than the one in Burnham, with less dinner items available, he said.

“But sometimes, when you make something simpler it is better,” Pannizzo said.

However, he said he does plan to add new items to the menu, including a taco salad. He also is considering serving breakfast in the future.

“There is no place in McClure to go have breakfast,” he said. “We are the only restaurant in McClure.”

Pannizzo also made some changes to the building itself. He opened up a wall to make the building more restaurant-like, painted several of the brick walls yellow and added Italian-style paintings and vases.

“People know me. People love me,” Pannizzo said. “You’ve gotta be friendly with the customer — give them good food, a smile and be their friend.”

Joe’s OIP is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. It is located at 25620 Route 522 in McClure. For more information, call the restaurant at (570) 658-6062.
