LEWISTOWN — Last spring, Punxsutawney ended Lewistown’s state championship quest with a 7-0 win in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals.
Thursday afternoon, the Chucks denied the Panthers another title — only this time in a lot more suspenseful fashion.
A four-run seventh helped Punxsutawney wipe out a 7-2 deficit and earn an 8-7 Central Penn League victory at Rec Park.
The loss denied Lewistown a chance to clinch the league title outright, though if Williamsport loses to Philipsburg-Osceola in its final CPL game next week, the Panthers would still claim the crown.
Any way you slice it, Lewistown coach Ray Hoppel summed up the disillusioned feelings of the Panther fans after the game.
“It’s pretty surreal,” he said.
