SHIPPENSBURG — Bad weather didn’t slow down Friday’s District 3 track and field championships, but it sure didn’t help the times and distances.
Perhaps because of the conditions at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium — despite being dried before the meet, the track itself had a handful of wet spots all day — most of the times and distances were lower than expected, and few athletes other than the automatic qualifiers advanced to states.
The day was especially hard on Juniata and Greenwood, both competing in the Class AA portion of the meet. The schools combined for just a handful of medalists in the events that were completed in the first day of action, and just one individual qualified to come back for next week’s state championships.
The boys from the two local teams had the worst day of all. Among those who competed, none placed, and none of the sprinters or hurdlers made it past the semifinals and into today’s action.
