Lasting reminders

A pavilion stands in the St. John’s Christian Day Care playground in memory of former teacher Casey Marthouse, who died in a car accident in 2008.
BELLEVILLE — Casey Marthouse always had a smile and a hug for the children at St. John’s Christian Day Care, director Rob French remembered. Although Marthouse died in a vehicle accident in 2008 at the age of 20, the joy of the Belleville woman’s life continues today, he said. About a year ago, French, Marthouse’s former teacher and youth group leader, and her parents, James and Daphne Marthouse, decided to begin a scholarship in her memory for families at the Belleville day care. Casey Marthouse, who taught the toddler class at St. John’s from 2006 to 2008, is remembered as a sincere, caring young woman, French said. “Her smile and her laugh were just incredible,” French said. “She was special.” He remembered that she would sit on the grass and teach the children by naming car colors as the vehicles passed by. The Casey A. Marthouse Memorial Scholarship will be given to families based on need, French said.
