Am I Dreaming, or is it Spring? Simple tips to prepare for the warmer months ahead

March 26, 2009 - Bethany Fehlinger and Marjorie Stromberg
There's nothing quite like the first day of spring. Your feet, once restricted by wool socks and wet boots, feel breezy and free, which they haven't felt in months. You push your windows open in your car and house, and feel a slight breeze, as birds chirp around you as the sun beams down. I must be dreaming, you think. This time, it's not a dream; spring is on the way.
While some people enjoy the winter months, I do not. I don't like driving to work in the pitch dark, when it's 3 degrees outside. I don't enjoy wringing out my socks and shoes when I get home because I've accidentally stepped in a pile of snow. I don't like my hands going numb while pumping gas. I don't like to walk into my house after a weekend away, and find it so cold I can see my breath. But those days are (hopefully), a thing of the past. Spring is slowly creeping up, and I couldn't be more excited!
There are many things you can do to prepare yourself for the warmer months. I've actually been preparing myself for spring since November, but that's besides the point.
One of the first things I do when preparing for spring is take inventory of my closet. I take out all of my spring clothes from last year and look through them. Some I decide to keep, while others I toss or give away. Are 13 pairs of flip flops enough? Do I need more skirts, more T-shirts?
Once that's done, since I keep my spring clothes in piles on a shelf at the top of my closet during winter, I move them down to the most coveted space in my closet: the hangers. Then I demote my sweaters and long-sleeved shirts to the reject spot: folded at the top.
Now, my spring clothes are in full view, and my heavy sweaters are out of sight and out of mind.
The next thing I do is what some people call a "spring cleaning." While for most this means cleaning out storage space and throwing things out, I focus on lightening things up. I will take that extra blanket off my bed, buy some new flowers; anything it takes to make my apartment feel light and breezy. I'll buy some floral or fruity scented candles and put away my pumpkin spice and apple pie candles.
One of my favorite spring and summer snacks is frozen fruit, so I'll buy extra fruit, such as bananas, raspberries and blueberries, and put some in the freezer. They make for a healthy, refreshing snack on warm days. Also, I'll stock my freezer with fruit pops and Popsicles. Frozen fruit and Popsicles never fail when it comes to getting you in the spring spirit.
With these easy steps, even winter-lovers can get excited about spring. Now I'll just be waiting patiently, heart pumping with anticipation, for the day when I can walk outside and don't need my pea coat, for the day when the sound of birds awake me in the morning, for the day when I can show off my pedicure with bright, shiny sandals ... ah yes, the first day of spring
