My dinner with Andre the Giant

June 11, 2008 - Jeff Fishbein
Dining with the Bears — or at least, a few of the folks in charge of the zoo — was great, and not just from the sports angle (see the column I wrote for more on that aspect).

Joining us at the table were many of the good friends we've made through hockey — including a couple of Capitals fans from Virginia (Washington is Hershey's parent club), the couple who sit behind us and a new friend who will be in an adjacent seat starting in the fall. If there was a sad note, it was that our friend from Siglerville could not be present.

Among all the fun, there was a poignant moment not to be lost. My wife, a scrapbook person, has an album marking the moments of the past three seasons that our son Christopher has been part of the game (the first one as a somewhat dispassionate observer, before he was born). She was showing it to this person and that, and then, much to her surprise, the book was handed to Bears general manager Doug Yingst.

He didn't gloss over it, he didn't ignore it — he browsed through the book, no doubt seeing a record of his own success as the creator of a great product families can enjoy together. The coach and the other front office staffers who were there were just as enamored of her hard work. And so am I.
